I’ve Been What??? Seven Songs for Life!

I’ve been tagged…how fun, how exciting, how sexy…how…wait, what is a tag again?

I got it!

Basically a tag is when you complete a meme on your blog and then double-dog-dare someone else to join in the fun.

Ok, I’m in!

Well, Sognatrice of Bleeding Espresso double-dog-dared, ur, I mean “tagged” me with a twisted rendition of the original meme. Sognatrice memmed about “The Seven Songs I Would Pick If I Could Only Listen To Seven Songs For The Rest Of My Life.” The original meme asked for “Seven songs you are into right now. No matter what they are. They must be songs you are presently enjoying. Then tag seven other people to see what they’re listening to.”

I think I will go with Seven Songs for the Rest of My Life…but either way this will be hard.

I’m not that much of a music lover, although I tend to relate songs in my mind to events happening in my life. For example, when I am driving around Catanzaro and get nervous I think of the song, “Ooohh Child…things are going to get easier….Ooohhh child, things’ll get brighter.” Sadly that is the only line I know from the song, so I sing it over and over and over again either in my head or aloud in the car until things, indeed do, get brighter!

Or, sometimes, when I am feeling silly or insecure I think, “You can buy your hair if it won’t grow, you can fix your nose if he says so, you can buy all the makeup that MAC can make, but if, you can’t look inside you, find out who am I to be in the position to make me feel so, damn unpretty…” Then I realize, that unlike the gals from TLC, I don’t have a guy who makes me feel “unpretty,” and I really only like that song cause it talks about wearing makeup from MAC.

And then there are times like tonight. When you go to gather your jacket from the gym locker room only to realize your cell phone, your MP3 player and 31 Euro (which was all packaged neatly in a little black pouch) has been taken from your zipped jacket pocket. (I should be grateful, I realize, since they did, infact, leave the keys to Vampira (la macchina pui vecchia in Calabria - the oldest car in Calabria) so I could get home. I get in the car, after struggling to explain what had happened, and get a little teary-eyed. All I wanted was to listen to Daniel Powter belting, “Cause you had a bad day. You’re taking one down. You sing a sad song just to turn it around….. You work at a smile and you go for a ride, you had a bad daaaayyyy…You had a bad day….” Only to realize - it was on the MP3.

Allora…I have procrastinated long enough…on with the meme!

7. Sad Songs (Say so Much), Elton John. It is good for those I’m-feeling-sorry-for-myself-moments (like above), but still upbeat enough to give you hope. You can sing, dance, tap your toe or whatever your thrill with this one.

6. ABC, Jackson 5. It’s fun, it’s catchy, it’s easy to sing along with, plus - who wouldn’t want an ex begging you back?? It would be perfect if I ever find myself estranged from Peppe in this pseudo-meme world where we can only listen to seven songs for the rest of our lives!

5. The Letter, Macy Gray. Ok, if you know the lyrics to this song you are thinking, “Cherrye - what are you doing???” But, Macy Gray was big time with my group of friends at Disneyland Paris in 2000, and I constantly sang this song. One day my friend Jason said, “Cherrye, you always sing the happiest songs.” “Really?” I asked. “Cause this song is about suicide!” I don’t necessarily like the meaning of the lyrics, but the music is so dang fun. I just feel happy when I sing and dance to it, so it has to be included in my Top 7.

4. Independent Women, Destiny’s Child. Has there ever been a better Female-Power song than this? (I know you might be thinking…”I Will Survive” by Gloria Gaynor, but she was pining away over some dude…these independent women are taking care of themselves!) “The shoes on my feet, I’ve bought it. The clothes I’m wearing, I’ve bought it. yadda yadda yadda, I’ve bought it. I depend on me…”

3. Cowboy Take me Away, Dixie Chicks. Unlike many Americans, I didn’t disown the Dixie Chicks over their little blunder a few years back. I actually like them, and I love this song! I realize this could seem like a contradiction to my #4 choice, but I only get seven songs for the rest of my life, and I want to be prepared for all situations. Plus, when Peppe and I met he worked at Disneyland Paris as a Cowboy. I tell everyone he was practicing so he could be a Vero Texano one day!

2. Seven Spanish Angels, Ray Charles and Willy Nelson. You can take the girl out of Texas, what can I say? This is a super sad song, but don’t worry - I can listen to The Letter (#5) to get happy!

1. Come Back to Texas, Bowling for Soup. I’ve always liked the song (for obvious reasons), but I really like the entire CD. It is fun and funky and silly. You can’t take life too seriously when you are listening to Bowling for Soup.

(Some close seconds and thirds….Bobby McGee, Janis Joplin; Again, Lenny Kravitz; Your Song, Elton John; Joker, Steve Miller Band…)

OK - now I get to control the universe and tag away….(hahahaha, wicked laugh). Well, I guess I only get to control the universe if you guys meme, too…so, please do it….please.

Ambra at Quasi Italiana ; Niki at The Life I Chose ; my new Bed and Breakfast buddy, Concetta at An Italian-Scot’s Stitching Journal (trying say that five times real fast!); Texas Espresso, fellow Texan who I just realized I have no idea what her real name is… ; J Doe at Buzzurro ; Louise at Life: The Journey….. ; and J, you know who you are, if you had a blog, you’d be tagged, too, so if you come around, why don’t you leave your choices in the comment section. Everyone else, if you decide to play, and I really hope you do, please leave me a comment so I will know where to check! Grazie!

Hi Cherrye. The very first sentence of your header caught my eye and grabbed my full attention. You and I already have something in common. I moved to Italy last April too. That, and I came to see your answers to the meme that sognatrice tagged you with! ;)
Although they didn’t make the list, I knew the first three songs right off the bat reading the lyrics. As for the list, I only know #’s 7, 6, & 4. Looks like I will be downloading some new songs very soon. :)

Oh my goodness, they snagged your stuff? Ugh! I’m going to call your number right now and bitch someone out if they answer! And you’ve just convinced me that I should never go to the gym here; thanks!

So…the post…Hah! You tagged some people I was thinking about! Excellent songs, and I have to say that your honorable mention of Lenny Kravitz’s “Again” was also one of my honorable mentions. I see that we have more than just this “living in Calabria” thing in common :)

Great - Stacy! HaHa…

Giulia, you just moved here, too?? Getting to close to our first year anniversary, huh? I’ll read more of your blog to try to learn more of your story…your girls are cute, though!

Sognatrice - YES - they totally ripped me off. I tried to call my number number, too, and they had already turned off the phone…go figure! Peppe called last night and cancelled my chip. Now I have to get a new phone, too. :-( I didn’t think I was into technology, but now that I don’t have it, I am sad!

I also liked you choices of Crash…he he and Bobby McGee, of course. You’ll have to go to Southeast Texas one day and check out the Janis Joplin museum!

I couldn’t begin to pick the 7 songs I could listen to the rest of my life. I’m not sure I could even pick the genre – classical, jazz, folk, rock? So I won’t touch that one. I guess the best I can do is tell you what is on my mp3 player right now, and that is: Shakira, the Brazilian Girls, Enya, a World Music compilation with musicians from around the world doing American rock tunes, and some electronica – some tunes from Dessous Chics and the Konki Duet. I actually just loaded this stuff on because I am going to Chicago for the rest of the week and this will keep me company, so I guess this is the music I will listen to for the next 7 days anyway.

PS Macy Grey is from the Cleveland area…we’re all suicidal around here.

Niki-no worries…we don’t want your daughter to go hungry for the meme…

J - you just had to rub it in that you still have an MP3 player, didn’t you? I won’t forget that!
